May 24, 2005, Toronto, Canada

High Criteria Inc, a world leader in computer audio recording systems, today announced the immediate availability of new versions of its flagship product, Total Recorder. The Standard Edition, Professional Edition and the Developer Edition have all been upgraded to Version 5.2. At the same time, a new add-on for Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and Speech Enhancement has been made available. The AGC and Speech Enhancement add-on will be of interest to any user who is recording the spoken word, as opposed to those who might record music or other audio sounds.

In addition to other standard maintenance, Total Recorder V5.2 offers a number of new features including:

  • Support for the new Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and Speech Enhancement add-on. This add-on performs a number of functions designed to enhance recording of the spoken word. Functions include:
    • Automatically controlling the sound level through digital algorithms.
    • Correcting the dynamic range of spoken word recordings.
    • Supression of background noise.
    • A Voice Activity Detector (VAD) that will de-activate the AGC when speech is not detected.
  • Total Recorder now supports the FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) compression codec.
  • An automatic recording level adjustment that will attempt to set the optimal level for recording.
  • The ability to exclude the loudest levels during normalization.
  • Issues for users recording Skype sessions have been resolved in this new release. Skype users must update their Skype program to V1.1.0.79 or later and update to V5.2 of Total Recorder.
  • The Recording source and Parameters dialog has been updated to allow specification of an input device for different recordings. This allows for different input devices on different scheduled recordings.
  • You can now copy tag information from one file to another.
  • The Options - Settings dialog has been updated and enhanced.

Both the Professional Edition and Developer Edition V5.2 have been enhanced with the following new features:

  • A Pause-reduction feature has been added. This feature helps to reduce the duration of pauses which are present for example, between Internet radio programs.

All Total Recorder V5.2 Editions are immediately available and may be downloaded for evaluation and purchase from the High Criteria Web Site at www.highcriteria.com. The evaluation versions of the programs will record for unlimited lengths of time, but will add an audible noise about every 60 seconds.
